Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Korvek is a disciplined and intensely private individual who spent much of his early life trying to prove that he belonged. Raised without a family and surrounded by those who viewed him as an outsider, he embraced Romulan culture and ideals with a determination that often bordered on obsession. He inherited the Romulan traits of ambition, suspicion, and strategic thinking, but also their dedication, pride, and sense of honor. He is driven to excel and has little patience for those who do not take their responsibilities seriously, though beneath his reserved exterior is someone deeply affected by questions of loyalty, identity, and belonging. With time, Korvek has become more reflective and willing to challenge the beliefs he once held without question. He remains proud of his Romulan heritage and the traditions that shaped him, but he has grown to recognize the flaws within them and seeks a balance between Romulan discipline and the ideals of cooperation he now believes in. He struggles with guilt over the choices he made in pursuit of acceptance and carries a quiet regret that has made him more compassionate, though he rarely allows others to see it. Korvek's exploration of his Human heritage is a relatively new and uncomfortable journey. For most of his existence, his humanity was something others used to define him as an outsider rather than a part of himself he could embrace. Now, after losing the Empire and much of the culture that shaped him, he has begun to question whether rejecting that part of himself was another way of denying who he truly is. Learning about Human history, customs, and perspectives is not an attempt to abandon his Romulan identity, but an effort to understand the full person behind the divisions others placed upon him. For Korvek, learning to accept both sides of his heritage might mean that someday he can be a whole person, one who lives by his own merits rather than the expectations of others. |

| Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths Korvek’s greatest strength is his intelligence and technical expertise. His experience with both Romulan and Starfleet technology gives him a unique perspective as an engineer, allowing him to approach problems from outside the traditional limitations of either system. His Romulan heritage grants him greater physical strength and resilience than a typical Human, allowing him to endure conditions that would challenge others. He possesses a strong sense of honor that drives his desire to be a better person than he once was. As a leader, he is demanding but fair, holding his teams to high standards while increasingly embracing Starfleet’s more collaborative and supportive approach to command. His ambition remains one of his greatest assets, pushing him toward excellence, though it can just as easily become a source of conflict. Weaknesses Korvek’s greatest weakness is his uncertainty over where he truly belongs. He carries deep guilt over his choices, his departure from the Romulan Empire, and the loss of the people and culture he spent his life trying to prove himself worthy of. He remains intensely private, even by Romulan standards, while simultaneously struggling with a growing curiosity about his human heritage and the fear that embracing that part of himself is a betrayal of his lost people. His ambition and pride can still drive him toward unhealthy extremes, and years of suppressed guilt, anger, and self-doubt can occasionally overwhelm his control, allowing the intense emotions he has spent a lifetime containing to break through. |
|
| Quirks | Korvek is meticulous about organization, keeping his workspace arranged with almost obsessive precision; every tool and component has its place, and he is quick to notice when something has been moved. When working through a difficult engineering problem, he often keeps his hands occupied by absentmindedly turning a hyperspanner or disassembling and reassembling a small component. He also has an unconscious habit of positioning himself where he can observe the room and its exits, a remnant of his Romulan upbringing that persists even in the relative safety of Starfleet. | |
| Ambitions | Korvek seeks to build a future defined not by the divisions of his past, but by the choices he makes in the present. He is determined to prove himself worthy of the trust Starfleet has placed in him while preserving the honor and traditions of the Romulan people he still calls his own. As he continues to explore the human heritage he spent much of his life denying, he hopes to reconcile the two halves of his identity and become someone who can bridge cultures rather than stand divided between them. | |
| Hobbies & Interests | Physical Training: Korvek maintains a rigorous physical training routine, including weight training, long-distance running, swimming, and the practice of traditional Romulan martial arts such as N'Delrek and Kormerek. He treats maintaining his physical condition with the same discipline he applies to his professional duties. Romulan Advocacy: Korvek remains deeply concerned with the future of the Romulan people following the destruction of their civilization. He researches potential colony sites, follows resettlement efforts, corresponds with officials and organizations, and uses whatever small influence he possesses to advocate for a permanent future for Romulan survivors. Romulan Culture & History: Korvek works to preserve Romulan history, literature, and cultural records, ensuring the identity and traditions of his people survive and endure into whatever future awaits them. Human Culture & History: Having spent much of his life disconnected from his Human heritage, Korvek has begun studying Human history, literature, and customs in an effort to better understand the part of himself he once ignored. Model Starship Building: Korvek builds detailed model starships by hand, finding the careful construction process a rare opportunity for quiet reflection. His collection includes vessels from multiple cultures, representing the different worlds and ideals that have shaped his life. |
| Personal History | Korvek was raised in a Romulan orphanage in Mhiessan, a major port city on Romulus, with no knowledge of his parents or where he came from. From a young age, his half-Human heritage made him the target of suspicion and prejudice from those around him, a fact he was never allowed to forget. Raised among Romulans, he embraced their culture, traditions, and values, determined to prove that he belonged. Rather than allowing the discrimination he faced to push him away from Romulan society, Korvek pushed himself further into it, striving to be the best among his peers and prove that he was just as worthy as any other Romulan. He learned that ambition alone was not enough to succeed, that survival often depended on intelligence, secrecy, and seizing opportunities to get ahead even if he hurt someone else in the process. Korvek developed a cunning and manipulative streak early, learning to navigate in a culture where treachery and loyalty could be intertwined at any given moment, and where trust was rarely given freely. His adoption by Senator Vaelor i-Tavaris tr'Kelan at the age of ten gave Korvek the family and opportunity he had always wanted, though he struggled to accept that he truly belonged. Over the following eight years, Korvek excelled in his studies, developed his technical abilities, and brought honor to his adoptive clan. Vaelor was immensely proud of him and fully supported his ambitions of attending the Imperial War College. However, Korvek's desire to prove himself remained stronger than his sense of loyalty. When Vaelor's ties to the Reunification movement threatened Korvek's ambitions, he made the decision to betray his adoptive father to the Tal Shiar in exchange for a place at the academy. At the Imperial War College, Korvek was trained to become an officer of the Romulan Star Empire, studying command, strategy, and the traditions of the Romulan military while enduring constant scrutiny from the Tal Shiar. His aptitude for engineering soon distinguished him from many of his peers, leading him to specialize in the field. As the years passed, the consequences of betraying his father began to weigh on him. Though he buried those feelings beneath discipline and ambition, doubt slowly took root, and he began to question whether the path he had chosen had truly been worth the cost. Following his graduation from the Imperial War College, Korvek was assigned to a warbird that he would serve on throughout the years of the Dominion War, the IRW Vhaedriss, initially as a general engineering officer. When the Romulan Star Empire entered the conflict, its forces took the brunt of the fighting while the Federation and Klingon Empire recovered from their early losses. Korvek participated in numerous engagements, both in ship-to-ship combat and ground operations against Jem'Hadar forces, earning respect not just from skill, but his bravery as well. Over time, as the Vhaedriss suffered losses, Korvek served in various roles, including damage control, cloaking specialist, and eventually taking command of the engineering team entirely when his commander was killed during a boarding event. The war cost him friends and comrades, but it also brought him into contact with other young officers who believed the cooperation between the Romulan Empire, Federation, and even the Klingons was their people's path into the future. In the years following the Dominion War, Korvek found himself respected among his fellow officers and recognized for his service and bravery during the conflict. Alongside other young Romulan officers who had become war heroes in the eyes of the public, he began advocating for continued friendship and cooperation with the Federation and Klingon Empire. They remained a minority voice against the older ruling class and admiralty, who viewed the alliance as a temporary necessity rather than the future of the Romulan Star Empire. Within only four years of the war's end, the situation had deteriorated further as Romulan society turned against itself. After Shinzon took control of the government, his loyalists began purging those viewed as threats to his rule, including Korvek and other officers who supported greater cooperation with the Federation. Given no choice except to flee or die, Korvek chose to defect to the Federation. It was the hardest decision of his life, after betraying his adoptive father. As the government collapsed under Shinzon's control, the fleet became divided between supporters and opposition. Korvek and several other young officers who had questioned the direction of the Empire used the confusion to escape, though not all of them survived. Some were caught between Shinzon's forces and the Tal Shiar, who viewed any potential opposition as a threat to their own power. For Korvek, leaving the Romulan Star Empire meant abandoning the only home he had ever known, and to trust - a hard word, for a Romulan - a former ally and enemy both. His blood ran green, and he didn't view Humanity as his people no matter his heritage. Upon arriving in the Federation, Korvek found himself forced to prove his loyalty all over again. Many within Starfleet viewed a former Romulan officer with understandable suspicion, and it took time before he found the sponsorship necessary to enter Starfleet Academy. Between 2380 and 2382, he completed an accelerated program designed for experienced foreign officers transitioning into Starfleet service before receiving a commission. His first assignment was aboard the USS Caelian, where he served for four years as an engineering officer. Although his technical abilities earned respect, adapting to Starfleet culture proved far more difficult than mastering its technology. After his assignment aboard the USS Caelian, Korvek transferred to Starbase 22 near the borders of Federation, Klingon, and Romulan space, serving as temporary Chief Engineer for a year while the primary engineer was on parental leave. The Romulan Supernova in 2387 was a devastating loss for Korvek. Despite his complicated relationship with the Empire, the destruction of his homeworld and so many of their colonies, along with the collapse of his people's civilization affected him deeply. He remained committed to preserving what remained of Romulan culture and began advocating for the survivors of the disaster as refugees began to pour into Federation space, many of which came through Starbase 22. The loss forced Korvek to confront questions he had spent much of his life avoiding: where he belonged, what it meant to be Romulan after the fall of the Empire, and how he could honor the people he came from while building a future beyond it. Determined to find his place in Starfleet and as one of the last survivors of a once-proud civilization, Korvek joined the USS Moore as Chief Engineer later that year, more determined than ever to forge that future with honor. |
